Newcastle United thrashed relegation-threatened West Ham United 5-1 at the London Stadium as the Magpies’ pursuit of a first top-four finish in the Premier League (PL) since 2002/03 gained impetus. Callum Wilson and Joelinton each scored twice for Newcastle.

After scoring their first goal, Newcastle quickly increased their advantage. Fabian Schär played a perfectly timed through ball into the path of Joelinton, who beat the offside trap and finished by slipping past Ukasz Fabiaski. After a disastrous first 20 minutes, this inspired the home team to pick up the pace, and despite Lucas Paquetá and Michail Antonio missing excellent opportunities, Kurt Zouma capitalized on Nick Pope’s error to halve the deficit at the half.
After regaining some composure in the midst of a chaotic first half, West Ham lost all control of the game within 30 seconds of the restart when Nayef Aguerd tragically mishandled the ball, enabling Jacob Murphy to set up Wilson for an easy goal. With just one loss in their previous 10 Premier League away games, Newcastle went up against a weak Hammers defense hoping to continue their winning streak. Fabiaski held firm to stop attempts from Murphy and Saint-Maximin.
